Songs About Werewolves

Today, March 10, 2017, is Remus John Lupin's 57th birthday (RIP). These songs don't just remind me of Remus and Sirius, they literally are about Remus and Sirius.

“Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls

“When everything’s meant to be broken / I just want you to know who I am.” (A werewolf.)

Every Goo Goo Dolls song is basically the plot of a 14-year-old’s fanfic and I LOVE IT. Do you feel like this song is about Remus letting Sirius know he’s a WEREWOLF? And maybe Remus is SCARED TO LET ANYONE IN, SCARED TO LET HIMSELF LOVE? Could be : ).

"Maybe Sprout Wings" by The Mountain Goats

“I thought of old friends, the ones who’d gone missing / Said all their names three times.”

Imagine Remus abandoned the years after Sirius’s “betrayal” and the deaths of his closest friends. IMAGINE IT!!! This song makes me feel a terrible ache in the center of my being: Remus living alone and dreaming of everything he’s lost. Like James Darnell sings: “ghosts and clouds and nameless things.” AVADA KEDAVRA ME RIGHT NOW.

"Ladder Song" by Bright Eyes

“I’m tired of traitors always changing sides / They were friends of mine.”

Conor Oberst’s sad warble makes me think of Sirius alone at Grimmauld Place, still half-mad, probably drinking through the last of the Black family Scotch, waiting for Remus to return from some Order mission. A sad and lonely song for a sad and broken man : (.

"Fare Thee Well" by Oscar Isaac (From the Llewyn Davis soundtrack lol)

“I had a man, long and tall / who used his body like a cannonball.”

A beautiful rendition of a folk song about bidding adieu to a past love. Perhaps the forbidden love between a pureblood wizard and a young werewolf. Perhaps, perhaps.

"These Bones" by Dashboard Confessional

“Lay my bones at the feet of the Ministry” (of Magic)

Look, I’m not reading into it here. This song is literally about Sirius Black in Azkaban, and his reunion with long-lost love Remus Lupin.@Chriscarrabba, care to weigh in?

"BITE" by Troye Sivan

“Don’t you want to see a man up close / A Phoenix in the fire.”

Am I into Troye Sivan because he reminds me of a scrawny autotuned Remus Lupin? Would that be embarrassing to admit? Doesn’t this honestly sound like a song by a young, lovelorn werewolf?

"Brothers on a Hotel Bed" by Death Cab for Cutie

“On the back of a motorbike / With your arms outstretched, trying to take flight.”

A song with a literal reference to a flying motorcycle? Come on. COME ON. This Death Cab song makes me think of Sirius wasting away at Grimmauld Place post-Azkaban: The things he would say to Remus, if he could only find the words and the bravery. I’m going to put these lyrics up verbatim on Archive of Our Own and see how many Kudos I get before Ben Gibbard’s lawyers get in touch.

"Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon

“I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's / His hair was perfect.”

This isn’t a song about Remus and Sirius so much as a song I imagine them listening to together. "Werewolves of London" came out in 1968, the year Remus and Sirius graduated Hogwarts. Set the scene: they’re living in a junky little flat together in Diagon Alley, flipping through the radio hunting for this song, and then they find it and they HOWL and they DANCE and they KISS? Maybe "Werewolves of London" is the saddest song on this mix, because OH GOD ONCE THEY WERE HAPPY, AND THAT TIME WAS SO BRIEF.
