The Cool Girl’s Guide To Kathy Hill’s Iconic “Last Christmas” Makeup

All of the eighties girls who lusted after George Michael and his feathered blonde hair would’ve killed to play the love interest in Wham!’s “Last Christmas” music video. Our leading lady is actually a catalogue model named Kathy Hill. I put my excellent investigative journalism skills to use and asked my mom, who was very into pop music during Wham!’s rise to fame, if anyone knew who Kathy Hill was. She—like me and probably everyone else who has ever seen the “Last Christmas” music video—had never heard of her.

Nonetheless, Kathy Hill’s iconic “Last Christmas” makeup is proof that eighties makeup can be cool without looking like Cyndi Lauper threw up on your face. This makeup look is totally wearable despite peach lipstick being out of place in December.

The eighties were all about matte skin. For foundation that has a modern matte finish, say goodbye to cakey powder and stick with a long wear liquid foundation like Make Up For Ever’s Mat Velvet+ Mattifying Foundation. This formula will hold up to a full day of skiing and last long enough to decorate the tree while breaking the heart of last winter’s fling.

Kathy’s cheeks look flushed but not overdone. Get the look by dusting on a shimmer-free warm blush like Marc Jacobs Beauty’s Shameless Bold Blush in Soft Peach. This will give you that “just drank three glasses of wine to ease the tension in the room” glow.

A strong brow never hurt anyone. Kathy’s eyebrows are fluffy, shaped, and defined. Get the look with a long wear brow gel like Glossier’s Boy Brow. This one and done filler won’t budge or flake during the annual snowball fight at the ski lodge.

Kathy’s eye look is so modern for the eighties. The L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Palette in Nude 1 is an affordable eyeshadow palette that’s great for a contoured, neutral eye. Palettes are compact for travel so this option is perfect for your winter vacation makeup bag. Follow up with a waterproof brown eyeliner smoked out on the upper and lower lash line. We recommend Smashbox’s Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner.

Opt for a solid waterproof mascara for when you need a shoulder to cry on. Try Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Splashes for run-proof lashes.

Replace a bold peach lipstick with a peachy nude lip balm. Glossier’s Generation G in Cake is a much more winter appropriate color option. This formula wears like a balm, finishes like a matte lipstick, and will stick around no matter how many smooches you exchange with your new lover.

Finish with a setting spray to lock in your makeup. We love Urban Decay’s All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray to keep makeup in place even through a long night in a crowded room, and when your friends get tired eyes, you’ll still be looking model-chic.
